About Luke

I’m Luke, and I like students who want piano to feel organized in their head, not merely correct under their fingers. One of my favorite moments in a lesson is when a student sees a passage they have been struggling with and suddenly says, “Oh—that’s all it is?” Nothing magical happened to their technique in that moment. They simply stopped seeing twenty unrelated instructions and started seeing the pattern underneath them.

Because of that, I will often ask you questions while we work: What chord are you actually playing here? Where does this pattern return? What changed from the previous measure? Which voice should the listener hear? I am not testing you. I am trying to develop the habit of looking at music intelligently rather than treating every new piece as an entirely new physical puzzle.

This approach may suit you especially well if you are an adult learner, a returning player, or somebody who can already play but feels that pieces take far too long to learn. I do not want your solution to be “practice more hours.” I want us to make each hour more precise.

About the lesson

If every practice session begins at measure one, this approach is designed for you. Many piano students can play the opening of five pieces beautifully but rarely feel comfortable from beginning to end. The reason is often not lack of ability; it is the way the piece is being practiced. In our lessons, we will build what I call a map of the piece before trying to perfect every detail. Where does the harmony repeat? Which section is genuinely new? Which passage looks different on the page but uses the same underlying shape? This kind of structural understanding is consistent with the reference profiles that emphasize analyzing music rather than simply reproducing it.

For difficult sections, we can use a skeleton-first approach. Imagine a passage with melody, bass, inner chords, pedal, and complicated rhythm. Instead of fighting all of that at once, we reduce it. First you may play only the melody and the bass notes that define the harmony. Then we add the most important chord tones. Then the rhythm becomes exact. Then articulation, pedal, and expression return. What originally looked like twenty independent notes often turns out to be three or four musical shapes with decoration around them. Once you see those shapes, the passage becomes much easier to remember and much harder to lose.

Hand coordination is treated the same way. “Practice hands separately” can be useful, but it is not always enough, because the problem often happens at the exact moment the hands interact. We may identify one coordination checkpoint—for example, the left hand changes harmony exactly when the right hand crosses a finger—and practice only the fraction of a second surrounding that event. Then we connect the checkpoints. This is much more efficient than playing an entire page slowly when only two moments on the page are causing the breakdown.

Your weekly practice will therefore be very specific. Instead of “practice this piece,” you may leave with something like: stabilize measures 18–20 using the skeleton version, play the left-hand progression from memory in three starting locations, then rebuild the right-hand rhythm at a comfortable tempo. The piano profiles in the reference material repeatedly combine repertoire, technique, improvisation, creative work, and structured tracking rather than treating practice as simple repetition.
