About David
About Mr. Mejia
Welcome! I am incredibly excited to work with you this year. My goal is not just to teach you mathematics, but to help you build the confidence, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills you need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
My Background & Qualifications
I bring a deep passion for education, a strong academic foundation, and a wealth of classroom experience to our community. I have been teaching mathematics for a decade, dedicating my career to helping students unlock their quantitative and analytical potential.
On the academic side, I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics Education and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from Grand Canyon University. As a fully credentialed educator with a Clear Mathematics Credential and CLAD Authorization, I have spent years studying and practicing the absolute best ways to make complex ideas clear, accessible, and engaging for every learner.
My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that anyone can be a "math person." Math isn't about memorizing rigid steps or racing to find a single correct answer; it is about patterns, exploration, and training your brain to think in new ways.
In my classroom, we focus on a collaborative model designed to get you up, thinking, and working together. We treat mistakes not as failures, but as essential steps in the learning process.
My Commitment to You
Your success, growth, and well-being are my highest priorities. I am here to guide you, challenge you, and support you every step of the way. Let’s make this a fantastic, productive, and inspiring school year!
A Quick Tip for Day One: Bring an open mind and a willingness to try. The best learning happens when we aren't afraid to ask questions!

Teaching Method and Techniques
My core philosophy focuses on building deep conceptual understanding rather than relying on rote memorization. I use a technique called scaffolding, which means breaking complex, intimidating formulas down into digestible, logical steps. By encouraging active participation, I ask guiding questions that prompt students to discover the solution themselves. This ensures they learn the underlying logic behind the math, rather than just copying steps to get the right answer for a single test.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Every sixty-minute session is structured to maximize engagement and retention without overwhelming the student.
The Warm-Up (5 Minutes)
We begin with a quick review of the previous session's concepts. This builds immediate confidence and ensures the foundation is solid before moving forward.
Concept Introduction (15 Minutes)
I introduce the new topic using interactive visual aids, drawing tools, or real-world analogies, avoiding rigid textbook jargon.
Guided Practice (25 Minutes)
We solve problems together. During this phase, I gradually step back, letting the student take the lead while providing real-time feedback and corrections.
Independent Review and Wrap-Up (15 Minutes)
The student tackles a few problems independently to prove mastery. We close by summarizing what was learned and mapping out the focus for the next session.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor
Many people can solve math problems, but my strength lies in reducing math anxiety. I create a patient, completely judgment-free environment where mistakes are treated as valuable learning tools rather than failures. I excel at translating abstract mathematical concepts into concrete, relatable examples, adjusting my communication style in real-time based on how a student uniquely processes information.
