About Timothy
I’ve taught many subjects in some pretty diverse classroom settings- biology, ecology and conservation in the inner suburbs of cities with declining populations, middle school science and math in more affluent suburban districts and, most recently, in an academy for 11th and 12th graders who were interested in becoming engineers, I taught honors physics, 11th and 12th grade technical English and honors economics. My economics classes were integrated with the 12th grade English curriculum, so I was able to provide students with opportunities to write about emerging and timely economic events and controversies, from local economies to the global economy. Reading writing and speaking are about communicating. That’s easier to do when you know just what it is that you’re trying to communicate.

Language wasn’t invented-it evolved, from grunts and gestures and even facial expressions. Language is still evolving! And mostly it’s becoming more efficient; it’s communicating. More info with less effort and fewer words. English is one of the more complicated languages because it is an amalgam of so many other languages and dialects and even cultural habits. In my classes, I try to help my students UNDERSTAND English by knowing how it evolved rather than demanding boring, rote memorization just because I said so. There are fascinating stories of war and conquest and resistance behind the evolution of the English language. Learning about that way can be fun.
