About Sydney

I have been singing more or less my whole life, and love trying out different styles. I also play guitar and piano, write music, have some (emphasis on some) music production skills, and am knowledgeable about music theory. I work in psychology research and am very interested in arts and health and the ways music can be used to build self-esteem, create social connection, improve self-awareness, and develop emotional skills. While this will not necessarily work into every lesson, it's something I really value in my work!

About the lesson

I have learnt piano myself through a mixture of being self-taught and formal, university training, so I come prepared with a range of methods to help you learn proper technique during our lessons, and to guide your self-study outside of lesson time.

Beginner piano lessons will combine a mix of music theory/music reading instruction, so that you can get comfortable reading sheet music and understand the structure of whatever you're playing. I will likely give you some short pieces/exercises to practise, but the goal is to get you playing what you want to play, whether that's pop, jazz, classical, and so on (although I'm always happy to make recommendations)! So early on I will try to get you playing something you like and build up your skills to suit.

I can offer lessons in my home with my full-sized keyboard if needed or preferred.

Please note I only teach piano lessons for those with little to no experience playing piano, as I don't feel I am suited to supporting players at intermediate level or above.
