About Dylan

Hi, I’m Dylan — a middle and high school English teacher with over a decade of teaching and tutoring experience across schools, university classrooms, enrichment programs, and private tutoring.

My background is in philosophy, including graduate training and IB certification in Theory of Knowledge. I have also led university tutorials and developed and taught a university course in applied ethics. These experiences have deeply shaped the way I teach English. Rather than simply correcting students or telling them what an interpretation should be, I ask thoughtful questions that help them clarify what they notice, uncover what they want to say, and develop their ideas with greater depth and precision.

My teaching is built around an inquiry-driven Studio method. Philosophy taught me that stronger thinking rarely comes from being handed better answers—it comes from asking better questions. Studio brings that same spirit into English, helping students discover ideas for themselves, refine them through discussion and writing, and communicate them with clarity and confidence.

I work especially well with students who are bright but under-stimulated, who rush through English work, who struggle to move from summary to analysis, or who understand ideas in conversation but find it difficult to express them clearly in writing.

The deeper aim is to help students become sharper readers, stronger writers, and more independent thinkers—students who can recognize an interesting idea, develop it thoughtfully, and communicate it with confidence.

My sessions are not simply homework help. They follow a flexible Studio structure designed to help students slow down, notice more, think more clearly, and express their ideas with greater precision.

A typical session begins with an engaging anchor: a novel passage, short prompt, painting, riddle, philosophical question, or current school assignment. From there, we look closely, discuss what we notice, name the thinking move, and turn that thinking into stronger annotations, sentences, paragraphs, essays, or creative pieces.

One of the key features of my approach is that lessons are built around what a student’s own writing reveals. I pay close attention to where a student’s thinking becomes strong, where their language becomes vague, and where they understand an idea in conversation but struggle to express it clearly in writing. From there, I identify one specific skill to practice — such as moving from summary to analysis, using stronger evidence, developing clearer sentences, or connecting a detail to a larger idea.

Depending on the student’s needs, sessions may include close reading, literary annotation, essay development, vocabulary, creative and reflective writing, argumentation, philosophy/TOK-style discussion, or support with novels, short stories, and school assignments.

The practical results I look for are concrete: stronger annotations, clearer paragraphs, richer vocabulary, more confident discussion, and a better ability to explain why a detail matters.

For students who feel disconnected from English, the goal is also to make reading and writing feel less like compliance and more like a meaningful way into ideas they actually care about.

If this sounds like the kind of support you’re looking for, feel free to reach out and tell me a little about your child’s interests, where they would benefit from support, and what you hope to see them build.
