About Colin

A graduate of the prestigious Drummers Collective in New York City, I regularly perform and record in high level settings, including with Kandace Springs of Blue Note Records, and as the touring drummer for the Broadway Musical “On Your Feet!”. I have over 20 years of playing experience starting at age 8, playing in bands since age 14, and working professionally in NYC for 10 years. I am proficient in a wide range of musical styles including Jazz, Rock, Funk/Soul, Afro-Cuban, Caribbean, Hip-Hop, World Music and beyond. Drumming is such an integral piece of my life, and I love to be able to share the knowledge and the path to all who seek it.

About the lesson

My goal in teaching drumming is to illuminate the connection between practicing drums and playing music, giving students of all levels a meaningful role in their own learning process, and maximizing the joy and satisfaction you feel from playing. Whether you’re just starting out or already playing at a high level, I can help get you where you want to go!

In our initial lesson I want to gain an understanding of your drumming goals and curiosities, musical tastes, and your progress on the instrument so far, as well as leaving you with a personally crafted exercise to start working on immediately. In each following lesson I will observe your playing for improvements and weaknesses, assign catered exercises, and demonstrate how these exercises guide you towards better and more controlled playing.

Aside from exercises, I like to have students select songs/pieces they want to play, and create step-by-step programs to achieve that goal. Having a musical context (like your favorite songs) to link our general practice to is extremely useful in highlighting that all-important bridge between practice and music.

One area where I can be of great assistance is with auditions. Whether its for a grade school ensemble or a world tour, I can help you prepare thoroughly and efficiently for your audition, and can offer unique tips and insight to give you the upper hand. From my experience as a 12-year-old in school band performances to the highly competitive world of Broadway musicals, I’ve experienced the whole range of audition pressure, and understand what is needed to rise up above the others.
