About Marianne
I am a Native English speaker from western Canada. I hold a CELTA teaching designation, an M.L.I.S. (Master's in Library and Information Studies) and have more than 10 years full time English teaching experience on four continents. I have taught English in Thailand, Canada,Ecuador, Chile, Saudi Arabia, China and Mexico. I speak intermediate level Spanish.
I lave a son whom I am homeschooling in Mexico, when not teaching or working as a digital marketing expert and blogger.
I love teaching English and keep coming back to it. While teaching English for business and tourism in the CORFO program funded by the Government of Chile, I was awarded recognition and awards for ranking in the top 10% of all the teachers in the region (the region that included the capital, Santiago). This was determined by how well my students did on the TOEIC test at the beginning and the end of the program. One of my students wrote a letter to the Editor of El Mercurio newspaper about my class, and how much he learned and appreciated my teaching (El Mercurio, 7 dec 2010). I was so proud of all my students and I loved seeing them improve and gain confidence and the ability to speak English so much better.
I also designed courses for micro-schools in China that were very successful, and within three years of studying literature and taking my classes on the weekend, my middle school age students reached near native English speaking, reading, writing and listening abilities and were accepted into the most elite international school in Shenzhen and studied abroad.
I believe that all people can learn, if the teacher adapts the lessons to suit the students. I make learning fun and engaging to make learning easier, and use the Spaced Repetition method to review and repeat new material enough times, in enough interesting ways, so that you truly learn and remember what you have learned.How much you learn, and who quickly you learn, is all up to you. I make learning English FUN so that it's easier to learn and remember.
I work very well with low intermediate to advanced students (upper elementary, middle school, high school, university and adults). I also have many years of teaching very young learners (age 4 to 8).
My classes are based on you needs and goals. For each topic, I present a short 10-15 learning point, then we will do a guided activity to help you learn it, a freer activity to practise it and a free activity (game, real life situation, role play, discussion) to help you apply it, and master the concept before moving on. We review what you have learned before and add to it every class. My methods have worked for all ages and levels of learners. If you need better English to study abroad, or want to improve your English to work in business or tourism with English speakers, I can help you.
I have a proven track record of success. I was ranked in the top 10% of all English teachers in the fifth region of Chile for three years in a row (all the years I lived in Chile) by the Government of Chile, based on how much my students' TOEIC scores improved. One of my students in this program even wrote a Letter to the Editor (Dec 7 201 El Mercurio) about my course, praising it and encouraging others to take my classes. I have kept in touch with my students for years and many were able to get jobs with their improved English skills and knowledge.
