About John
I received a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and Master of Music Degree from Northwestern University. My teachers have included Vincent Cichowicz, John Harding, James Ketch, Andre Come, Armando Ghitalla, Arnold Jacobs, Mel Broiles, and William Vacchiano. I have experience in solo, orchestral, chamber music, and jazz. Teaching experience includes Western Illinois University, Elgin Community College, and Northwestern University (Preparatory Division).

My teaching approach is very similar to that of the late Vincent Cichowicz, former member of the Chicago Symphony and internationally renowned teacher. Accordingly, I focus on both the requisite physical skills and artistic expression. Physical skills include air flow and articulation. Like Cichowicz, I isolate various elements of trumpet production so the student can focus on one at a time. Once mastered, new skills are incorporated in more complex music. I believe it is essential to initially simplify specific physical skills (e.g., slurring, tonguing, multiple tonguing) until they have become somewhat automatic. Also, it is vital to ask the student questions in order to understand their perspective about challenges and successes.
Artistic expression includes sound concept and musical interpretation. I address all aspects of trumpet playing using a combination of etudes and exercises. Resources I use include books by Arban, Clarke, Schlossberg, Charlier, and Bousquet. Depending on the student's particular interests, these may be supplemented with solo or ensemble literature (e.g., orchestral excerpts).
