About Alec
I am a student at Oxford University reading for Materials Science. At A level, I took Maths, Further Maths, Physics, and Chemistry, achieving top grades. I have been tutoring for 5 years, helping my students reach their full potential in their subject, as well as develop an independent curiosity for learning. Teaching the STEM subjects I am passionate about has helped me understand what is so important and enjoyable about them. While studying in my grammar school, I got my first experience teaching as a French and 11+ tutor. Finding that I enjoyed teaching, I carried on tutoring STEM subjects at GCSE level while I was studying for my A-levels. I achieved top grades (A*A*A*A) securing my place at Oxford University to study Materials Science. Here, I have carried on teaching, including A-level STEM subjects, and further developed my teaching methodology based on my experience being taught by world leaders in the field of Materials Science.

As a current University student, and recent A-level and GCSE student, I have an easy time relating to my students on both an academic and non-academic level. I have found that relating to my students on the academic level has been key in helping them develop the same passion and independent interest for STEM that I have. I find that very often, all this takes is some one-on-one time to find what a student can get out of their subject and therefore what it takes for them to be interested in it. For students studying the GCSE and A-level courses, I have lots of experience in translating intelligence and knowledge of the subject into high marks, which is unfortunately not always guaranteed for intelligent students with an imperfect exam system. I also have experience taking students who have been let down by a teaching system previously, or who require extra attention, helping them achieve their full potential. My approach to teaching consists of a balance between developing a student's genuine independent interests, possibly beyond the course, and making sure that students have the tactical knowledge to ensure their ability is reflected well by their exam marks. I teach online over Zoom (although I am happy to use other video platforms on request) and I am very flexible with my teaching times - students can book different time slots each week.
