About Katie Irene
I have been tutoring in reading and writing since I was 7 years old. My degree is in Math and Education, but I did take literacy and writing classes, too. I studied phonics instruction alongside my school studies and continue to study new techniques. I have helped teach several students to read and better understand what they are reading.

I tend to start by asking where a student is at with reading and writing. Having a reading level or grade level equivalent is very helpful, so I have an idea of where to start. I do typically have to do leveling during the first session to make sure we are working at the student's level.
My lesson plan depends on the student's level, but I start sessions with simpler topics and move on as I feel the student is ready. I do try to include new vocabulary and reading time for all students. Yes, even if they are not reading yet. I read to them to get them used to reading. I always recommend reading daily at home.
I have worked with students who need to start with learning the alphabet, as well as students who need to work on switching from reading the words to understanding what they are reading. With writing, I have helped students learn to write their name up to writing paragraphs.
