My methodology can best be described as half essentialism and half progressivism. This means that my materials and lessons are mostly traditional and knowledge-based. Rules of grammar are rules, word definitions are mostly fixed, spelling is either correct or incorrect, and stories mostly are exactly that - plot, characters, narration, and dialogue although they do have the potential for more subjective interpretation. But most of this is straightforward; it's knowledge. That's essentialism. But this material is selected and presented according to student need. If you need help with spelling and vocabulary, then it's flashcards and practice quizzes. If it's essays, it's responding to prompts, content, and grammar. When it comes to literature, as mentioned earlier, stories are to some degree subject to a reader's interpretation. This opens up the possibility for the lessons to be more student-centered. That's progressivism.
