About Sophie

Hello! I'm Sophie, a History student at the University of Cambridge and an experienced English tutor with four years of tutoring experience. I studied English at A-Level before specialising in essay-based subjects at university.

Alongside tutoring students from primary school through to A-Level, I have also taught English internationally, including during a teaching placement in Hong Kong. I have worked with students of all abilities, from those looking to build confidence and strengthen core skills to high-achieving pupils aiming for top grades and competitive university places.

I am passionate about helping students become confident, articulate communicators and critical thinkers. My goal is not simply to improve grades, but to help students develop a genuine understanding of English and the skills that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond.

About the lesson

I offer personalised English tuition for students from KS2 through to A-Level, with lessons tailored to each student's individual strengths, goals, and areas for development. Whether a student is looking to improve comprehension, strengthen their essay-writing skills, develop greater confidence in analysis, or prepare for examinations, I create lessons designed specifically around their needs.

My teaching focuses on the core skills that underpin success in English: analytical reading, critical thinking, vocabulary development, grammar, written expression, and effective essay structure. I help students move beyond simply understanding a text to producing sophisticated, well-supported arguments and written responses.

Lessons are typically one hour long and are carefully planned in advance. I create personalised resources, provide detailed feedback, and regularly adapt my teaching to ensure students are making consistent progress. I also place a strong emphasis on building confidence, as this is often the key to unlocking a student's full potential.

I have four years of tutoring experience and have worked with students ranging from primary school through to A-Level, including many pupils at high-achieving independent and grammar schools. I particularly enjoy helping ambitious students develop the skills needed to achieve top grades and become confident, independent learners.
