About Rebecca

I'm Rebecca Hunter, a 2021 graduate of Japanese from the University of Edinburgh - one of the top ranking institutions worldwide. I completed my year abroad jointly with Seikei and Okayama universities in Japan.

During my time at Okayama, I spent some time as a Community Liaison for the International Centre there - acting as agent of intercultural exchange to the local community. During my stay in Tokyo I spent my time mostly inside, as circumstances would have it.

My dissertation was themed on linguistical elements used to express masculinity and femininity and their prevalence of use, which is a lot of words to say that I interviewed a bunch of people in Japanese and translated their comments to talk about the attitudes towards gender norms in Japanese society.

Outside of Japanese and teaching, I'm a software engineer and medical student! So I'm looking for students while I try to become a doctor :)

About the lesson

I teach in a relatively freehand style, with oral Japanese being the main component that I try to cultivate in my students.

For beginners, using the Genki structure as a loose template, I work students through the fundamentals of grammar while focusing on how that grammar is implemented in spoken Japanese.

If needed, I provide cheat sheets for reference while I work through lessons with my students. This is a beginner service, as by the time we come to intermediate I have either taught you how to find good resources, or you have them available thanks to your own research.

I have experience working with young kids and older adults, age is no barrier to learning. If you have even a little bit of interest in Japanese, let me teach you and we can have fun together :)

Definitely recommend! Rebecca is awesome to work with and takes her responsibilities very seriously. She's approachable and easy going, and will surely make your learning experience fun and enjoyable. She puts a lot of effort into structuring her lessons tailoring them to each individual and makes explanations easy to follow. Very fluent, knowledgeable of Japanese culture as well, plus bonus points for being familiar with youth slang/informal Japanese!
