In order to teach English or Mathematics effectively, I need to listen to the needs of the student. Understanding these needs will help me understand their situation better. Why does he want to learn English? Why does she want to focus on Speaking skills? Are they more interested in learning Academic English, Colloquial English, or both? What part of English or Math do they find intimidating and why? As my students communicate to me the basic pressures of life that they are dealing with, I can help them find effective ways to stay focused and motivated.
In regards to teaching productive English skills, we can start at the basic building blocks of an Independent Clause and build more complex sentences from there. In regards to teaching Mathematics, we can start with the foundations of addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication and finding useful applications in everyday life.
Learning a new language is extremely challenging. Thus, I give students more time to express themselves, make mistakes, correct their mistakes, and grow. Balancing Teacher Talking Time to Student Talking Time is pertinent to developing not only their language and mathematic skills but more importantly, their confidence. Students will be given ample time to solve their own problems. As a teacher, I will play the role of facilitator in assisting them to think, find the pieces to solve their problems, and basically enjoy the process.
