About Fiona
Hello! My name is Fiona and I run a creative writing workshop here in Copenhagen called Maison Verb. I've taught 15+ intensive writing workshops here - in wine bars, garden parks, and Soho House Copenhagen. I also help students (undergraduate and graduate) with international university applications, mostly in the US but also elsewhere in the English speaking world.
I was part of the first class of Minerva University, a university co-founded by the former Dean of Social Sciences at Harvard / Behavioral Studies at Stanford. The inaugural class was selected to study while simultaneously building the university / future of higher education. At the time the acceptance rate was 1.8%, now it is 3.6% and is still the most selective university in the US.
My university experience shaped the rest of my life - I met my partner there, my best friends, developed my world views and discovered what I love learning about. Helping you get into university is deeply fulfilling because it feels so meaningful.
When I am not writing, teaching or tutoring, I am outside on cafe terraces or in nature with family and friends.

The process:
In our first meeting I will ask you questions about your future plans and goals. If you don't have a list of universities in hand we will go through them to find the right matches, otherwise we will begin with deep diving into your motivations. Universities all want to know why you want to study, and why they should admit you over other candidates. I'll ask you questions to uncover the most unique elements of your experience and motivations so your application stands out. Then I will send you the list of essay questions the universities of your choice require. I will share a Google Doc in which you will write a first draft - it can be bullet points - and then you send it back to me. I will edit it and shape it into a cohesive, compelling essay. Then once the rest of your practical application materials are in place, it is time to submit! I'll be there with you throughout the entire process.
Many students are using Chat / other AIs to write essays. And while it's hyper efficient and incredibly convincing, universities have advanced AI detection tools that are getting better daily. Now they are even detecting essays written by AI who were instructed to make it 'not sound like AI.' While it's super helpful for generating ideas and metaphors etc, using AI to write your college essays will most likely lead to a rejection. So we will write/edit from scratch! To capture your authentic voice. College admissions are not looking for perfect - they are looking for inspiring, deeply human stories from students who would add real value to their university and community.
