About Jackson

Jackson Poling is an award winning pianist, composer, and music educator who is passionate about helping students discover their own creative voice. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of British Columbia and has performed in a wide variety of musical settings, from accompanying classical ballet and improvising in jazz ensembles to performing regularly with the Vancouver pop band Orchid Orchestra.

He creates a patient, encouraging environment where young musicians feel safe to take risks, ask questions, and celebrate their progress. While classically trained, Jackson enjoys teaching a wide range of styles including video game music, movie soundtracks, pop, rock, jazz, and everything in between. He encourages students to discover new music, explore unfamiliar repertoire, and develop a curiosity that extends well beyond their weekly lessons.

Jackson’s goal is for every student to leave each lesson feeling inspired, more confident, and excited to continue making music on their own. Jackson's passion for writing and playing translates directly to the way he teaches. No matter what kind of piece, or what level it is, he tries to find something the student can be excited about.

About the lesson

Lessons will primarily consist of a theory/technical component first (10 minutes), followed by a focus on repertoire (20-40 minutes), and ending with ear-training or sight-reading practice (5-10 minutes).

Repertoire depends on the student's personal interest, but RCM and Faber are great for beginner-intermediate lessons. Adult - University level students will focus on individual pieces and arrangements found online or in-store.

Students will generally be working on up to 4 pieces at a time but this may vary. Preparation for exams is optional, but if that is the case a lesson plan will be prepared months in advance for practice tests on theory/technical requirements each lesson.
