About Hanif

Hi, I’m Hanif! I’m an Honors graduate in Computer Science from the University of Michigan, and I love helping young people discover how fun and powerful coding can be.

During my studies, I worked on a wide range of projects, from a search engine and machine learning models to a mobile app built with a team of eight. I also interned at an education technology company backed by the National Science Foundation. There I built software tools used by a full-time engineering team and worked on an AI study assistant for college students. That experience showed me how coding is done in the real world, and I bring that into every lesson.

For the past several years I’ve been teaching as well. I built and teach a Python bootcamp for students ages 11–18, I teach AP Computer Science A in Java, and I mentor high school students as they build their own apps for competitions like the Congressional App Challenge. I also served as a teaching assistant at the University of Michigan.

I’m patient, organized and always prepared. My goal is not just to teach students how to write code, but to teach them how to think like programmers: breaking down problems, staying calm when things break, and feeling proud of what they build.

Whether your child is writing their first line of code or preparing for the AP exam, I’d love to help them get there. Let’s build something amazing together!

My teaching method

I teach coding the way real programmers learn it: by building things. Every concept, from variables and loops to classes and objects, is introduced through a small project the student actually cares about, like a game, a quiz app or a chatbot.

1. Build first, then explain. Students write working code in the very first lesson. Theory makes much more sense once you’ve seen it run.
2. Debugging is a skill. I don’t just fix errors for students. I teach them how to read error messages, test their code and find bugs on their own, which is the skill that matters most for real programmers.
3. Think before you type. We plan solutions in plain English and pseudocode first, so students learn problem-solving, not just syntax.
4. Live coding together. We work in a shared online editor, so I can see the student’s code in real time and guide them step by step.

A typical lesson

Recap (5 min): a quick review of last session’s concept or project.
New concept (10–15 min): a short explanation with a live example.
Hands-on building (25–30 min): the student codes a feature or mini-project while I coach.
Challenge (5–10 min): an extra twist to stretch their thinking.
Wrap-up (5 min): what we learned and a small project to try before next time.

For AP Computer Science A, lessons follow the College Board units, with practice on multiple-choice questions, free-response questions and exam strategies.
