About Peiyu

Hi! This is Peiyu. I'm a PhD graduate from the University of Nottingham, and I love teaching and helping students feel more confident in their work.

I've spent the past few years teaching undergraduate students, supervising postgraduate dissertations and helping students with their academic writing and research. Alongside my university teaching, I've supported over 100 postgraduate students with their essays, dissertations and research projects, helping them strengthen their academic writing and work towards better grades.

I've also been a student for a very long time myself (perhaps too long!), so I know how frustrating it can be when you have lots of ideas but struggle to put them into words, or when you're staring at a dissertation chapter and don't know where to start!

What I enjoy most about teaching is helping students work through those tricky moments. I believe everyone learns differently, which is why my approach is needs-based and learner-centred. I always start by listening to what you want to achieve, understanding what you're finding difficult and figuring out together what kind of support would be most useful. I don't believe in following the same teaching plan for everyone.

I'm also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and CELTA-qualified, with a background in English language teaching and educational psychology.

I'm friendly, patient and happy to adapt my teaching as we go along. You can bring your questions, rough drafts or half-formed ideas to our lessons. There's no pressure to get everything right the first time!

Whether you're working on an essay, tackling a dissertation, improving your English or polishing your CV, I'd love to help you make progress and feel more confident along the way.

I believe that good academic writing is a skill anyone can develop with the right guidance, practice and feedback. Whether you're struggling with your first university essay, working on a dissertation or trying to express your ideas more clearly in English, I'm here to help!

My approach is friendly, practical and flexible. I don't just tell you what to change in your writing; I explain why something works (or doesn't!) and help you develop the skills to become a more confident and independent writer.

My qualifications and teaching experience

I hold a PhD in Learning Sciences from the University of Nottingham, an MA in TESOL (Distinction), a research master's degree in Developmental and Educational Psychology, and a CELTA qualification. I'm also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

As a Teaching Associate at the University of Nottingham, I taught undergraduate lectures and seminars and marked students' assignments. Having been on the other side of the marking process, I understand what university lecturers look for in academic writing, from clear arguments and critical thinking to effective use of evidence.

I've also supervised postgraduate dissertation students, helping them with research proposals, methodology, academic writing and the challenges that come with independent research. Alongside my university teaching, I have seven years of research experience and have supported over 100 postgraduate students through academic consultancy.

How I teach

Every student is different, and so is every dissertation! I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, I tailor my lessons to your goals, current challenges and learning preferences.

Depending on what you need, I can help with:

-Essay writing: Planning essays, building clear arguments, improving critical analysis, organising paragraphs and using academic evidence effectively.
- Dissertations and theses: Refining research questions, structuring chapters, writing literature reviews, choosing research methods, understanding data analysis and discussing findings.
- Academic English: Improving clarity, coherence and academic expression, especially if English isn't your first language.
- Practical English: Building confidence in everyday conversations, university discussions and professional communication, using authentic English and real-life examples.
- CVs and personal statements: Presenting your skills and experience clearly and tailoring your applications to specific opportunities.

For dissertation and thesis students, I offer particularly flexible support. You don't need to follow a fixed programme. If you're stuck on your literature review, unsure about your methodology or struggling to organise your discussion chapter, we can focus entirely on that.

You're welcome to book a one-off session to work through a particular problem, discuss feedback you've received or prepare for a meeting with your supervisor. If you'd prefer regular support throughout your dissertation, we can also develop a plan together and adjust it as your research progresses.

My lessons are interactive and relaxed. We might review a section of your writing together, discuss your ideas, work through examples or practise a specific writing technique. I'll always explain my suggestions and encourage you to ask questions. The aim is to help you understand how to improve your own work, rather than simply making corrections for you.

For English learners, I also draw on my CELTA training and MA in TESOL to make lessons engaging and relevant to real-life situations. I want you to feel comfortable practising English, making mistakes and gradually building your confidence.

Lesson length and who I teach

Lessons typically last 60 minutes, although 90-minute sessions are available if you need more time for dissertation work or detailed writing feedback.

I mainly work with undergraduate, master's and PhD students, including international students who want extra support with academic English or understanding UK university expectations. I also welcome adult English learners, graduates and professionals who want to improve their English, CVs or personal statements.

Most importantly, I want you to feel comfortable bringing your questions, unfinished ideas and even messy first drafts to our lessons. You don't need to have everything figured out before we start. We'll work through the challenges together, at a pace that suits you.

My goal is to help you feel more confident in your abilities and build skills you can use long after our lessons.
Looking forward to starting this learning journey with you
Warmly
Peiyu
