About Claire

Hello, I’m Claire, and I’m studying maths at the University of Warwick. I enjoy maths because I love solving problems and learning new things. I am happy to tutor GCSE maths, A- level maths and further maths (having achieved A*s in all three).

Over the summer I taught in a Secondary school in Africa – I taught the equivalent to years 10, 12 and 13. With no technology or textbooks, class sizes of about 100 and the students’ limited knowledge of the English language, I learnt to be creative in the way I taught, and came up with lots of visual and inventive ways to explain things. The test results of the students I taught increased by an average of 14% over the six weeks I was teaching them. In addition to this, I have volunteered in maths lessons in English Secondary schools, acting as a teaching assistant, working either one-on-one or with small groups of students who needed extra help working through questions.

In my spare time I enjoy playing table tennis and piano. I also volunteer at events as a first aider for St John Ambulance.

About the lesson

My sessions will be led by the student, I will adapt my teaching style to what works best for them so they can get the most out of the sessions. I will start by asking the student what they would like to get out of the sessions, whether that be specific topics they’d like some extra help with or something more general such as exam practise.

Generally, I will start the session by either explaining a concept or by going through some easy questions on a specific topic, depending on how confident the student is with the topic. Throughout the session I will progress to more difficult questions, until the student is stretched to just outside their comfort zone. Then I will let the student try out some questions for themselves to assess how well they have understood the material.

I believe that the key to doing well in maths is to understand the theory behind why we do what we do instead of just memorizing equations. Therefore, I hope to explain the material in a way that helps the student to have a clear understanding of what’s going on. I will adapt my teaching style based on what works for the student, for example if the student is a visual learner, I will explain the concept through pictures and diagrams.

To conclude, each of my sessions will be different for each student because everyone learns differently and I want each student to get the most out of each session.
