About Luke

I am a third-year bioinformatics/comp sci student at U of T. I have completed many courses in their encompassed fields, such as calculus, statistics, biology, organic chemistry, and computer programming. I have much professional and community experience with students of all ages, from primary to secondary school, thanks to volunteering, counselling, tutoring after-school and freelance elsewhere. This experience includes working with international students, for whom I also hope to improve communication in English, a second language to them.

I am intimately familiar with highly communicative positions, and I have acted as leader/director in many past experiences and projects. I can use these communication and professionalism skills to produce a healthy environment for learning and socializing between me and my student.

I have a high amount of experience in computer programming, having completed multiply school and personal projects, in group and individual settings. I can use this programming knowledge and experience to aid in any debugging or programming related questions, too.

I love teaching as much as I love learning, and I'm looking forward to aiding any striving students in my area.

About the lesson

Each student learns in different manners and at different paces from others, and I understand that this requires flexibility in my teaching methods.

To that end, I have employed many different techniques to teach material, such as:
- First-principles, for the students who understand concepts by building theoretical knowledge from the ground up.
- Example-driven, for the students who wish to better apply their knowledge through exercises and problems. Generally, this may also be used in conjunction with the first technique.
- Visual intuition, for the students who prefer to generate their own spatial/geometric understands of abstract concepts, which is especially helpful for calculus and other mathematical disciplines.

In the past, tutoring sessions have begun with a brief "interview" for me to assess the student's understanding. From there, using primarily established resources (like school-provided textbooks, rather than outside sources) I begin to aid in the students' understanding using any of the techniques above, amongst many others.

I believe that in small-class settings, the tutor and the student are at roughly equal footing. While I will try to push the student's knowledge further as much as I can, it is also important to assure that thorough understanding is achieved in step A before advancing to step B. This requires mutual communication between me and my student, which I am more than happy to provide.

Details

Cancellation must occur no less than 24 hours before the scheduled class. Failure to do so results in a cancellation charge equivalent to half the rate of the cancelled classes. Otherwise, rates are as normal (including any rescheduled classes).

The specified rate assumes a primary school level education. For a secondary school level education, add an additional $10 for each hour.
