About Neal
I am an English teacher who lived and worked in China. I worked for both for a government school and a training centre, respectively.
I've taught classes as large as 70 students, and also taught one-on-one. Age ranges were from 11 years to adult.

I'm Neal and I'm an energetic teacher that has experience teaching students English from the ages of 11 years to adult.
To teach a topic, it's important that students can be able to relate to the topic at hand.
The first step would be to briefly and casually talk to the student for a minute or two about general things (How was your weekend? How was your day?)
Next, briefly introduce the topic and talk about it for a minute or two. (Travel, animals, friends, family)
Depending on the material, highlight certain words that may be problematic for the students, and explain their meaning.
Have the students repeat orally to ensure correct pronunciation. Repeat as much as is needed.
Depending on the material, use flashcards for identification and verbal practice. If the material is to be read, read the material slowly and carefully to the students, orally highlighting certain words. Read again, and then have the student read together with the teacher.
Thereafter, have the students read aloud the text, interrupting only if necessary. Allow the students to repeat again, to ensure correct pronunciation and contextual understanding of the text.
Ask questions about the text. (What do you think of...?, How do you feel about...?)
As a teacher, using gestures is important, as is elicitation, if the student is struggling. Reinforcement through oral repetition is also important, all the while ensuring contextual understanding.
