About Andre

I have been tutoring and teaching kids in a variety of contexts dating back to my time as a sophomore in high school, when I first got hired by a nonprofit to tutor children at public middle schools after school. At Penn, I am deeply involved with an organization that provides teaching assistance and lesson planning to Philadelphia-area middle and high schools. I also have a lot of experience as a writer myself, and I am very used to quality essay writing from the courses I have taken in college and in high school through IB. As for the SAT, I had a 1580 on my first try, and many of my students have improved their scores by over a hundred points.

About the lesson

I specialize in two main types of tutoring: writing help and SAT prep. Writing help is my main specialty, and I take a unique approach to it that I find helps many students develop not only their grammar but the very process through which they write. This help is really for anyone, as I have had students as young as 10 and as old as 17. When I help students with their writing, I start with either my student’s most recent major assignment or an assignment they are working on, and guide them through the steps of the writing process. I try to not only help my student find their voice as a writer, but also find the writing process that works best for them. I help my students find the way that it is easiest to initially express themselves, and then work with them to convert whatever that was — I’ve used everything from a text chain with a friend of theirs to an audio recording of them explaining their ideas to me — into well-structured essay writing. Once I establish that process, I move on to teaching my students how to proofread and revise their own work, which is a more straightforward process. The other main service I provide is SAT prep. While, having a background in writing, I do focus on helping students with the evidence-based reading and writing section, I am also very familiar with the math section, and in particular, the ways to take advantage of the new digital testing format. My SAT prep is customized to each student due to the breadth of material the test covers. Thus, to start, I ask my students to come to their first lesson having completed one practice test, even if they did abysmally on it. This gives me a starting point from which to teach them.
