About Syd
My name is Syd and I am a traditionally trained oil painter. Over the years I've learned more about illustration, acrylic, watercolors, drawing, and digital painting. I attended the Kansas City Art Institute for Painting. My main passions are helping my students build their studio practice, feeling confident when sitting down to create something new, and creating a comfortable environment for my students to ask any and all questions about art making (there are no dumb questions). I have taught students as young as 5 and as old as 89.

Thank you for taking a moment to check out a sample of my lessons to see if my teaching style is the right fit for you.
-Each of my lessons starts with a discussion about homework/previous work we discussed in our prior lesson. (5 minutes)
-This is followed by a warm-up (generally about 3-5 minutes) to get you ready for our session. Similarly to going for a run, your body needs a good stretch to perform at its best. Your hands and eyes need the same attention.
- Next, I will introduce the lesson for the day. Whether it's starting a new project or building off a prior one, each lesson will begin with a demonstration on my end that you can easily follow along with. If appropriate for the lesson, I love to add some art history to the discussion. (10 minutes)
- This is followed by the main activity. I will either have you set up a still life in your space (I will have a similar one set up in my space) and we will work off of that. OR I will share an image that we will both be working from. I enjoy drawing/painting with my students. I find this helps my students feel comfortable as we both are actively problem-solving without the stress of me "looking over your shoulder." (35 minutes)
- My sessions end with a couple of ideas/instructions for what to work on until we next meet. I love a good assignment that can be completed on your own time if your schedule allows it. I do not require the work to be completed before our next session however I do encourage it because building your own "studio practice" is important when learning a new skill and craft. (5 minutes).
