About Asha

I have been teaching since I began college in 2010, at Howard University.
Starting with fellow classmates in my music major courses soon developed into me tutoring music minors/choral members.
After being appointed section leader of the University Choir, I was tutoring at least 3 students a week while still holding rehearsals.
I can proudly say that my friends/colleagues at Howard were always very grateful for my help, as their instructors saw great improvement in technical knowledge and performance while in private lessons.

After Howard, I taught anywhere from 10-20 students around Chicago and Ohio in varying areas of music: vocals, music theory, beginning piano, songwriting, etc.

Recently, I have began consulting rappers that I encounter in my Hip-Hop/R&B production work. In Chicago, there are COUNTLESS rappers/artists who are attempting to deliver real vocal skills, with no accessible training. I began helping friends rap with more diction into the mic, speak and sing in phrases and improve their tone placement and quality.

Teaching/coaching has mostly been something I do for fun or to help out friends, family or neighbor children. Mostly for the love!

About the lesson

Hello! I am Asha, a 24 year old vocalist/composer/producer based in Chicago, IL. Trained at Howard University in both the Classical and Jazz Studies programs, I am blessed to extend my abilities to teach those who wish to share their own love of music.
My experience in so many genres of vocal music allows me to tailor my pedagogical method between students!
I love working with rappers who want to develop their singing and mic placement skills. Teaching young children how to play the piano makes my heart soar. I really aim to do it all!

I begin with helping my students visualize their dreams with music. I ask them to become deeply connected with their inner virtuoso--the one who will be playing sold out shows and selling albums (should that be the goal!). This focuses their journey through musicianship, and helps foster passion and discipline.
