About Taeghan

I am a TEFL certified English teacher, with over 20 years experience tutoring children and youth in a variety of subjects. I spent six years working as a Behavioral Interventionist with an Autistic Child, which helped me learn how to cater to people with different needs and abilities, and how to teach with flexibility within an established structure. I have experience working one-on-one, small groups (3-6) and whole classrooms, including teaching mixed-level ESL for elementary school children in Colombia. I focus on the conversational aspects of the English language: Pronunciation, vocabulary and listening skills. My studies in Creative Writing, English Literature and the Arts have provided me with an extensive vocabulary that I am delighted to share. I also have familiarity with the technical vocabulary that is required for Trades. My background as a classically trained singer, which covered five different languages and various dialects, has given me the insights to explain the subtle nuances required for correct pronunciation. With three years experience helping Spanish speakers learn English vowel pronunciation, I intimately understand in what areas a native Spanish speaker will need the most attention. One of the biggest barriers I have seen in learners of a new language is a lack of self-confidence that results in an unwillingness to speak. I am here to help you feel more comfortable and confident in your abilities. By engaging in fun, animated conversations on a regular basis, you will become more competent, motivated and encouraged to use English!

About the lesson

I hold a strong belief that learning should be fun or students don’t truly engage with the process. For this reason, I promise to keep classes exciting by catering to my students’ individual interests and needs. We can use games, music and creative activities to explore new learning points. Role-play is an invaluable tool for mastering conversation, and we can rehearse both imaginary or real-life situations to explore all varieties of encounters. Together we will establish a comfortable, trustworthy and non-judgmental environment in which communication will take place – this is essential to overcoming the lack of confidence that holds back so many learners! Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, because this is how we all learn - As your tutor, it is my job to offer encouragement and support during the process! I’m in your corner, and will utilize all my skills and abilities to help you succeed in your learning goals. Learning can be a challenge when the methodology doesn’t cater to your abilities. I understand that everyone has different learning styles, and I will take the time to discover and nourish your unique abilities. This is the first key to your success! We will uncover your talents together, and when we play to your strengths, you will reach your highest potential. Courses are taught in full-immersion English, specific words may be translated if required (Spanish or French). Lots of visual cues provided! Engaging conversational practice, employing the subjects that matter most to my students. Our conversations will be tailored to your individual needs and passions. Levels: Beginner - Advanced
