About the lesson

I’ve decided to start private tutoring, but I honestly don’t know where to begin. It seems like there are so many things to consider and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. Do I need to create a business plan, or should I just start advertising my services? Speaking of advertising, where do I even advertise? Social media? Flyers in the neighborhood? Or should I rely on word-of-mouth?

Then there’s the question of what subjects to tutor. I’m pretty good at math and science, but I also have a knack for English. Should I specialize in one subject or offer tutoring in multiple areas? And what age groups should I target? I could tutor elementary kids, but maybe high school students would be more rewarding? Or should I focus on college students who might need more advanced help?

Setting my rates is another huge question mark. How much is too much? How much is too little? I don’t want to scare away potential clients with high prices, but I also don’t want to undervalue my time and expertise. And what about the logistics of getting paid? Should I ask for cash, bank transfers, or set up an online payment system?

I’ve heard some tutors use online platforms to find clients, but I have no idea which ones are reputable. Should I join Preply, Wyzant, or another site? And how do I stand out among all the other tutors out there? I probably need a strong profile, but what does that even look like? Do I need professional photos or testimonials?

Then there’s the actual tutoring sessions. Should I have a structured lesson plan for each session, or just go with the flow based on what the student needs help with that day? What if a student asks a question I don’t know the answer to? How do I handle difficult or unmotivated students? And should I offer online sessions, in-person sessions, or both?

And what about legal stuff? Do I need any certifications or licenses to start tutoring? Is there any paperwork I need to fill out or taxes I need to consider? I want to make sure everything is above board, but I’m not sure where to find this information.

Honestly, I’m feeling pretty lost. There are so many aspects to consider and I don’t even know where to start. Maybe I should just take a step back and try to figure out one thing at a time. But which thing comes first?
