About Olivia
Hi! My name is Olivia, and I’m from Southern California. I’m currently a student at Texas Tech, and I have a huge passion for literature, reading, and writing. I’ve been tutoring my fellow students for a while now, and now that I’m in college, I think this is the perfect opportunity to help others. While I find English super fun, I know that it’s not everyone’s favorite subject! I passed the AP English exam with flying colors and have studied classical literature (yes, Shakespeare and all the “classic” books they make you read in middle and high school). I’m here to help you out—whether you need a hand understanding last night’s reading assignment, proofreading an essay, getting some tips on tackling the AP exam, or just need help getting through your book. Feel free to reach out—I’ll do my best to help you however I can!

My Approach as a Tutor (for 4th through 10th Graders):
As a college student at Texas Tech, I understand the challenges students face when it comes to English. My tutoring focuses on giving students the tools and support they need to improve their writing, reading comprehension, and exam performance. Whether you’re struggling with understanding the class reading, essays or preparing for the AP English exam, I’m here to help!
Teaching Method & Techniques:
Proofreading & Writing Assistance: I focus on helping students refine their writing. I guide them through the proofreading process, helping them catch grammar errors, improve sentence structure, and make their ideas clearer. I also offer step-by-step assistance with drafting and revising essays.
Essay Help: I break down the essay-writing process into manageable steps, from brainstorming and outlining to crafting a strong thesis statement and supporting arguments. I offer constructive feedback on drafts and help students develop their writing skills over time.
AP English Exam Tips: I share my own strategies for passing the AP English exam. I provide tips on approaching multiple-choice questions, writing essays under time constraints, and improving reading comprehension for exam success.
Reading Help: I work with students to improve reading comprehension by teaching strategies for analyzing texts, understanding key themes, and pulling out important details. We also practice how to effectively write about what they read.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
Warm-Up (5-10 minutes): We’ll start by reviewing previous lessons or discussing any challenges the student may have encountered with their writing or reading.
Main Lesson (20-25 minutes): The core of the lesson focuses on the student’s current needs—whether that's proofreading a written piece, discussing an essay topic, or working on reading comprehension strategies.
Practice (10-15 minutes): Students will have time to practice what they’ve learned, whether it's revising a piece of writing, analyzing a passage, or applying AP exam strategies to a practice question.
Wrap-Up & Feedback (5-10 minutes): I’ll review the student's work, provide feedback, and suggest areas for improvement. We’ll also talk about what to expect in the next lesson.
