About Brendan
I am a TESOL certified ESL/EFL teacher with a Master of Arts degree in Linguistics from the University of Utah. I have enjoyed teaching across all of the skill areas--listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, TOEFL prep, etc.--and I have a particular interest in helping students improve their pronunciation and fluency using lesson content that interests them. I have worked with adults, adolescents, and children, from refugees to PhDs and in between.

Mastery of a second/additional language requires a combination of abstract work and authentic communication. The more students can read, write, and talk about topics that interest them, the better! Although it is sometimes crucial to engage in analysis, discussion of rules or patterns, practice, and even targeted, meaningful repetition, I find that with some planning and creativity, these activities can be crafted using cohesive content that students find enjoyable and motivational. And I firmly believe that this approach makes their learning more effective and durable. Many English learners want help in crafting a style of speech that is both fluent and easily understandable, but ESL/EFL courses and programs often ignore these skill areas or give them very little attention. Recognizing this deficit, I focused my Master's Thesis work on showing how English pronunciation can be learned systematically using a wholistic, content-based approach that also affords the learning of words, phrases, grammar, and conversation. This approach is my passion.
