Generally I start out by explaining that physics is the study of energy, how it gets into, changes within, and leaves systems. I explain that physics is in everything around us, how it's part of a rocket launch, yes, but it's also in how kids got to school today. I set out my expectations, that I know this class is new to them and that they wouldn't be here if they already knew the content, so I hope they are not afraid of showing me where they need help or making mistakes. I make it clear that since I need kids to ask questions, I expect that we will show respect when kids ask. I finally tell kids that the hope is that at the end of this class they have a better understanding of how to solve problems and the world around them.
