About Cathy

I am a Film & TV Production Graduate, with a world renown CELTA certificate in teaching English. I am currently private tutoring children and adults of differing English levels, and have been doing so for a year now. All my lessons are online, due to the present state of things. I have attended schools with over a hundred nationalities represented, and have always been surrounded by multiple nationalities. I love to learn about different cultures and am able to relate to people who have recently moved to a new country. I just moved back from Italy, where I had to learn Italian for the first time, and I am aware of how scary and vulnerable it may feel stepping into a whole new language.

About the lesson

I am a visual learner, my favourite teachers were very theatrical and used music, props, films and anecdotes to help the students inhabit the subject. Inspired by their example, I teach my ESOL students using visually rich stories from my childhood such as Mr Men and George & Martha to kindle their imagination. The ‘picture’ that is formed can then be clothed, so to speak, with appropriate words and phrases. Games are then used to practice or test newly acquired language in a fun way. With one of my young students, I have tweaked the game of ‘Hangman’ (transformed into ‘snowman’) to aid sentence-formation development and spelling; she absolutely loves this game. Constantly monitoring responses and progress, I tailor my teaching style and vary activities to meet a student's needs or preferences. I know how demoralising it can be when you are not able to understand a lesson due to the teaching style. Accurate grammar will follow in due course, but I believe the priority is to let children ‘own’ the language first. Fun is universally effective for learning!
