About Joseph

I went through the teaching licensure program and nearly finished but had to leave due to financial constraints. In my time in that program, I tutored in two high schools and two middle schools with both individual and groups of students. The most I have tutored at one time is twenty. I have generated worksheets to help students learn sentence structure, sat down in students and taught them research skills, and read over books with students individually and worked with them to explore what the hidden meanings are inside the text. I have successfully pulled up grades from near failing to above average.

About the lesson

I am a recent graduate from Northern Illinois University. My degree is in English with a minor in LGBT studies and I nearly completed my teaching licensure program but had to leave due to financial concerns of the time. I have experience tutoring middle and high school students, but have assisted college colleagues of mine as well. I find the best way to teach each person is to get to know the person one-on-one and understand what they are learning myself. Then, I pinpoint where the person seems to need the most assistance and help them practice until they are better in that field. Also, I find the student tends to know much more than they explain. They just skip over what they know to try and find the answer expected from them, but the answers they skip over are just as important. In general, I find one-on-one sitting with a student and exploring the world of English with that student is the best way to further their knowledge and advance their reading and writing skills, as well as sentence structure and more!
