About Keith

I'm a science and technology teacher with twenty years of experience. I've been teaching in many types of situations, like teaching in class, doing outside and indoor science shows. Have been also doing scientific demonstrations in science fairs and corporate events. In these events, we had booths (little area with tables) where colleagues and I would do chemical and physical experiments like Dry Ice or slime. I've taught at many levels from kindergarten to high school, and also to many cultural backgrounds such as Italians, Jewish, Russians, Asians, Arabic, and Latinos, with mainly teaching in English and French. I am patient and understand each student's needs. Learning from me is entertaining which keeps the student's attention. I also listen to worries and anxieties that students may have about learning difficult concepts. I will try to make their learning experience an unforgettable one.

Being a teacher for twenty years and having also experience in tutoring gave me a lot of knowledge about how to help students in learning. One of the key techniques is having the student grasp an idea of the subject at hand having a general idea of the subject. For example: If the subject is electricity, then we question the student about how they conceive the notion of electricity, there'll be a brainstorming of ideas and answers. This will get the student or students' attention and his or her interest in the subject. Next, we introduce the subject giving the main principles of the subject. So the methodology is going from general ideas to specific components of the subject like in this example we would talk about how electricity works by showing the principle behind electricity by saying it is a flow of electrons, then explain what electrons are and how they flow in an electrical circuit by looking at the atomic level and where in an atom is situated the electrons and how these electrons are influenced to move and produce current, that electricity has to do with positive and negative charges. This technique helps the student gradually understand the more intricate parts of the subject. Analogies are an important if not to say a crucial part of learning. It is used in the grasping of complex and abstract concepts or principles by making them more comprehensible by relating them to more familiar objects or concrete things. For example: comparing electricity to plumbing when one turns on the kitchen or bathroom faucets water comes out just like switching on lights that let electron flow in the light bulb making it light up. Analogies have their limits so the teacher or tutor must be cautious in knowing these limits. Pictures, videos, 3D illustrations, and animations are many didactical techniques that are used to make comprehension better, like the concept of atoms is difficult but when looking at a 3D model of an atom that is moving and seeing the electrons turning about the nucleus just like the planets around the sun in our solar system can be quite helpful; an image is worth a thousand words. With today's technologies: Computer-generated 3D models, short videos, and detailed beautiful illustrations, it is easier to teach and for the student to understand some difficult concepts and principles.
