About Despina

Hello, I’m Despina! I’m a native Greek tutor from Crete. I work as a primary school teacher during the day, and in the afternoons I offer one-to-one Greek lessons to anyone who would like to learn or improve their Greek.

I love helping students discover Greek in a practical and enjoyable way, using real-life situations, everyday communication and elements of Greek culture. Whether you’re a complete beginner, want to improve your confidence in speaking, or would like your children to connect with the Greek language, I tailor my lessons to your needs, interests and goals.

I have been teaching for the past 10 years, working with both children and adults in different countries. I hold a degree in English Language and Literature, a Master’s degree in Special Education and a CELTA qualification. Alongside my experience as an English teacher, I have developed extensive experience teaching Greek to adults and children using a communicative and learner-centred approach.

My approach to teaching Greek is communicative, practical and centred around real life. I believe that learning a language should be more than memorising grammar and vocabulary — it should give you the confidence to communicate, understand the culture and feel comfortable using Greek in everyday situations.

In my lessons, we work with authentic and engaging material such as conversations, stories, videos, songs and situations you are likely to encounter in real life. I adapt each lesson to the student’s needs, interests and goals, whether you are learning Greek for travel, living in Greece, connecting with your family and heritage, or simply discovering a new language and culture.

For adults, I focus particularly on developing practical speaking and listening skills, while naturally introducing grammar and vocabulary as they become relevant. For children, I use age-appropriate, interactive activities that make Greek enjoyable and meaningful, helping them connect the language with their everyday lives.

Lessons are typically 60 minutes long, although I can adapt the length depending on the student’s age, level and needs.
