About Raina

Hi, I'm Raina! I am a Biochemistry student at Texas A&M University, and I am determined to make learning more stress-free and clear for all students.

In high school, I had the honor to be an AP Scholar with Distinction and a multi-time State Finalist at the Science and Engineering Fair. Having recently mastered advanced coursework in Calculus, General Chemistry, and Biology, I know what it takes to excel in rigorous courses and standardized exams. I also believe that traditional memorization or feeding information is not the best technique, therefore I want students to learn to master concepts in an engaging way because concepts are highly important. For example, beyond my university coursework, I work as an academic research collaborator in protein engineering, where the concepts I've learned through my classes definitely apply in real-world laboratory settings every day.

As a tutor, my goal is to blend professional academic rigor with an approachable, encouraging mentorship style. I understand that subjects like Calculus and Chemistry can feel intimidating, which is why I specialize in breaking down overwhelming formulas into clear logic. Whether one is aiming to boost their GPA, master the SAT, or conquer an upcoming AP exam, I am more than willing to be there to give the exact tools, study techniques, and confidence for success and I can't wait to get started!

About the lesson

I want to contribute to people's learning and success by offering personalized, highly engaging tutoring sessions for high school and middle school students struggling to grasp the world of STEM. My lessons are structured in a way that students don't just rely on memorization but instead truly grasp the concept allowing them to excel. My sessions will start off by getting an understanding of their current level, then utilizing their past homework and exams they've struggled with as a foundation to build on.

The regular 60-minute lessons will follow the format of:
- 10 mins of warm-up and solid understanding of the previous lesson/previous concept
- 15 mins of targeted new concept introduction
- 25 mins of spread-out practice, first solving problems together and then allowing them to work on it individually under a mild time constraint and ask questions afterward
- Last 10 mins will be a wrap-up where I will ask the students to explain to me what they've learned and teach it back to me through a question or two to really solidify their understanding.

Afterwards I will note down improvements needed to be made or specific struggles I've noticed for them so it can be on their mind before we work on them the following lesson.

I want to not just drill concepts and formulas into their brains, I want to help them think and problem solve all in an engaging way. By teaching studying techniques, strategies, and love for learning I hope they will gain the academic independence and confidence to truly excel in what they learn!
