About Shira

Hello, my name is Shira! I'm currently a junior at Mount Holyoke College, where I'm studying Politics and Religion with a minor in Journalism, Media, and Public Discourse. I have several years of experience tutoring both my peers and younger students. Both in high school and college I worked as a peer educator in a variety of subjects. During my gap year, I worked full-time in a middle school to offer additional individualized support to students, particularly in ELA and social studies. Aside from education-related jobs, I've held several professional positions that have all taught me the importance of punctuality, time management, reliability, and leadership. The past years I've spent as a college student have caused great improvement in my own abilities as I've been challenged to write lengthy research papers. Lastly, I have worked both a contributing writer for a local newspaper and an editor for a student publication. Particularly as an editor, I was responsible for proofreading, copyediting, and fact checking. These experiences combined have given me a wide skillset perfect for English tutoring.

About the lesson

Hello! My name is Shira, and I'm excited to work with students on a variety of English-related topics! I have experience working with upper-level students through my work as a peer mentor in both high school and college. I also spent a year working with middle school students on all four of the core subjects, but have the most familiarity with ELA. I strongly believe in education equity and making education as accessible as possible. This means that I am both will to discuss rates at an individual level, and am happy to discuss scheduling so as to make sessions work with everyone's schedules!
I approach education from a strongly individualistic perspective, meaning that I think it's important to modify lesson plans according to each student's needs as I get to know the student and their learning styles. I also think it's important to provide detailed feedback in a meaningful way that not only tells students where they can improve, but also ensures that there are clear directions for how to improve. Typically, sessions would start with talking about the student is learning in school, where they're having difficulty, and building a lesson plan together that includes their input on how they think they can grow best. Lastly, my sessions are meant to not simply fix academic understandings of topics, but also help the student grow as a learner and thinker to prepare the student for independent learning. This means talking about time management, developing plans for how to manage challenges, and how to self-motivate.
