About Linus
I've had experience teaching maths to family friends and neighbours that are close to my age for many years now. I'm a firm believer in the fact that somebody who has recently gone through the education system and done exams is better equipped than anyone to offer help to those that might be struggling with the high demands of education. Having been in the same position as my students fairly recently I can fully understand any difficulties or problems they're having and be less intimidating than somebody who is much older than them.
I have additional teaching experience I acquired in school. I helped the further education department at my sixth form to set up sessions that offered maths that was beyond the curriculum for high achieving students in the years below me. The aim of these sessions (which I ran) was to help them to prepare for university entrance exams. As a maths obsessive who spends a lot of time reading around the subject, this type of teaching excites me greatly as I get to expose students to maths that really stretches them and makes them think more that any high school course would.

I offer two types of lessons. The first is for students that are struggling with their maths at school. In the first (free) session I'll work with the student to find out what they're struggling with and what they want help with. After that, I'll go through one of those topics just to make sure that my teaching style agrees with them. In subsequent sessions I'll first go over the content from a topic that was identified and then work up through various examples to some relevant exam questions. My goal with teaching in this way is not to just deliver a lecture but instead to make the student feel as if they’re making the steps themselves with my guidance. I find this approach leads to students remembering maths better and develops their problem solving skills.
The second type is for students who are finding maths at school far too easy or for high-achieving students who are transitioning to a harder level of maths (i.e. Year 11 to Year 12). I understand finding lessons at school too easy or too slow is deeply frustrating and I have the tools and experience necessary to push students to explore a new way of thinking and problem solving that comes with extra-curricular maths. These sessions would involve the introduction of a new concept or the re-framing of a concept the student is already familiar with at school. They would have a focus on hard questions and problem solving that I will guide the student through until they reach the answer. This sort of thinking is essential when undertaking maths-based university entrance exams.
Both these sessions would be an hour long.
