About Denise

As an instructor with over 20+ years in the classroom, I have a passion for education. I am enthusiastic about learning, but empathetic about the struggles some students face, understanding that not everyone learns in the same fashion. I embrace all learning styles in my lessons, again knowing that no two people learn in the exact same way, and also knowing that many students may not even understand what their learning styles may be. I am willing to explain concepts in as many different ways as necessary to gain understanding. I frequently rely on popular culture as a way to allow students to connect with the material, but I am also comfortable moving beyond pop culture.

About the lesson

Hello! I am Denise Walters, an instructor with over 24+ years of experience looking to supplement her income. I have three bachelor's degrees (Philosophy from Boise State University, biology, and English from the University of Northern Colorado), three master's degrees (English and Art History from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, Linguistics from the University of Colorado at Boulder), a law degree (the University of Colorado at Boulder), and a doctorate in education (Concordia University in Portland, OR). While I never earned my teaching certificate, I passed the Praxis in Art Education successfully. I have been a teacher for over twenty years. I have taught at most local Denver community colleges, the Metropolitan State University of Denver, the University of Denver, and the University of Colorado at Boulder. I taught concurrent enrollment classes at Colorado Early Colleges Aurora for the past six years. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught literature, composition, introduction to criminal justice, Humanities, art appreciation, art history, American/Local government, world mythologies, test preparation, and academic success. Throughout the years, I have also tutored numerous subjects, including what I have listed above, algebra, and various sciences. When tutoring, my typical lessons begin with covering the necessary information, and then asking students what questions they have or where they are struggling with understanding. From there, we work through assignments together. I believe in hands-on approaches combined with “why” conversations. I work hard to lead students to conclusions and understanding rather than simply providing answers because this develops critical thinking skills. If a student does need an answer because they cannot get to it, I can answer and then work backward to explain the process necessary. I have worked with students from elementary school through college undergraduate. I can structure my lessons in numerous ways based on students’ needs.
