About Mary Anne
I am a 5th-8th grade Resource SPED teacher in Chicago Public Schools and Transition Specialist for adult learners. I teach English Language Arts, Writing, Life Skills, and Phonics. Due to my background with diverse learners and different students needs, I am flexible and have a strong understanding of all subject levels. Additionally, I have been an ESL tutor for PreK-adults for 7+ years.
I have a TEFL certificate and a masters in Bilingual education. I care about making the students feel confident through structured practice, positive goal setting, and building a relationship. It is extremely necessary for students to feel comfortable enough to challenge themselves in tutoring. Students will have the skill set to independently apply the same strategies practiced in tutoring. I am a strong tutor with experience and I am comfortable getting to know both the student and guardians in order to help the student grow!
I have taught abroad, online, in person, 1:1, classes, ranging from 2 years to adults of over 15+ different language backgrounds and cultures. Students with severe, moderate, or learning disabilities have found success in both online and in person settings from working with me to find strategies that make sense to the student based on their needs. Every student thinks differently and benefits from different accommodations, modifications, or supports. My goal is to find which ones work to help the student learn, understand, and apply knowledge. Not to mention, I am wonderful at helping with organization and communication strategies to be successful in academic management at school.
I enjoying meeting new people and getting to know different ways of thinking. Every student is different and deserves to learn in a way that is comfortable for them. I would love to work with you to figure that out! Let's get to know each other, build a relationship, and have some fun learning and growing! :)
I started volunteering in schools at the age of 17. I have always enjoyed helping in the classroom and I continue to enjoy teaching.
I have a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education. I have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language certificate as well as Teaching English as a Second Language certification. Currently, I am pursuing a Master's Degree in Bilingual Education.

When working with a new student, my first step is to interview the student and if necessary, the guardians. It is important for me to get a sense of what the student needs and wants to improve on. This will help me focus my lessons and preparation to their specifics areas of growth. Later, I will be able to tailor my lessons to additional needs I have observed and have communicated with the student. The student and I will set a goal and make a plan together. Therefore, the will be able to set the same goals themself in the future.
I have worked with students with cognitive disabilities, autism on all spectrums, learning disabilities (especially with reading), attention disorders, and emotional defiance.
If would tell a student looking to hire a tutor that they want to be comfortable with a tutor. Therefore, they should ask to speak to the tutor on the phone or facetime before meeting in person. This will show if the tutor is passionate about getting to know them as a person outside of student. Additionally, it will tell them how they feel about that tutor.
I am fond of my experience in Prague. I had the opportunity to meet students from all over the world. This helped me expand my own world view. Additionally, I was able to get to know different cultures and ways of thinking.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The student should think about their academic strengths and needs as well as their personal goals. This will help me define the steps I need to take in order to prepare strong lessons.

Mary Anne is a compassionate teacher who does a great job tutoring for each individuals needs. She does a great job building relationships with the students and making it fun so that it feels easier on them as well!
She was very attentive and knowledgeable about the subject matter. She catered to my individual needs as a student, which was crucial to my success. Mary Anne is very patient and will work with you until you understand things completely. She is also willing to approach things in different ways if certain subject matters are proving to be particularly challenging.
Her experience in working with diverse learners. Her ability to break down work that is accessible and her willingness to support social emotional needs.
I worked with Mary Anne not as a student but as a fellow tutor and teacher. Her training and experience was greater than my own, so I found working with her most valuable in that she patiently shared her knowledge with me. So, in that sense, I was a student of hers. She is not only patient, but also diligent. She goes above and beyond to serve every student’s needs and she personalizes lessons so that each student succeeds. She makes students comfortable regardless of their level of their challenges. Whether she’s teaching a struggling child or assisting a new teacher, Mary Anne is remarkable at her task. A born teacher.
