About Tori

I am currently a college student working on getting my BM in Music Education at Indiana University. I just recently moved to the Fort Myers area and am subsequently looking to transfer to FGCU in the fall of 2021. I volunteer at Island Coast High School in Cape Coral working as an assistant choir director and absolutely love working with my students and getting to know them as musicians and individuals. I teach a multitude of subjects, but my strongest include Algebra 1, English, and Music. I have long known I have a passion for teaching kids and helping them grow, not only as scholars, but as people, fully enriching them and shaping them into fully-functioning, empathetic adults.

I first realized I wanted to become a teacher after seeing how incredibly happy my choir directors were in high school. Every moment was so special to them because they connected with a group of students and nurtured them to become the best they could. I found that so inspiring that I decided I wanted to stir that emotion in my own group of students and show them the joy of music and singing. This led me to start asking to teach small portions of class during high school.

I was a Pi Sigma scholar in high school, which essentially meant I was given the honor to student teach any course of my choosing my junior and senior year. I was lucky enough to be granted the ability to work with Algebra 1 classes that needed more help than more advanced students. I now work as an assistant choir director, helping students with pedagogical work as well as with strengthening the choir program.

The initial session is something of an informal interview: I like to get to know my students, as well as figure out any primary topics they may be struggling with. I find parent involvement to be highly beneficial in most cases, but I understand that many parents work demanding hours, so it is also important that we cover how each parent would like to be involved with their student's learning so that it is tailored to the need of each individual family.

I currently volunteer at a Title 1 school, so I have seen an array of students with many different backgrounds. The key to working with these students is not to fire teaching techniques at them, but to get to know them as people first, earn their trust, then continue teaching in a way you know they will understand and respond to in a positive manner.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Many teachers and students alike forget that we are all people first and foremost. We are not machines or robots whose primary function is to teach and learn. The only way a classroom can function properly is if the teacher and student have a mutual understanding and respect for each other. Students should always come to their teacher and tell them not only of any sort of learning difficulties they may have, but it is also so important that students trust their teachers to tell them other things they find distressing in their lives so that teachers may be more empathetic and gear lessons more to their needs.
