About Hankins

I've come to cherish my little spiralbound notebook. As a tutor, the most rewarding thing is coming to understand an individual student's aspirations, style, and comfort level with their coursework. That little spiralbound notebook is a place to jot down ideas: what works and what doesn't, what topics excite them the most, or how they feel most relaxed while learning. What pushes one student to their peak might stress out another.

From bolstering reading and writing skills at in-need city preschools with Jumpstart to providing comprehensive college essay feedback with Princeton's online tutoring service, this attention to the student and their context has been at the core of my teaching philosophy. I can't wait to share it with you.

As a recent graduate of New York University, I understand all to well the enigma of education. Helping students pierce through this to understand what they value from learning is the single most interpersonally fulfilling thing I do. These moments of growth, celebration, and reflection are at the core of the most special experiences we have as people.

At its best, learning is a space for affirming oneself, for taking stock of your strengths and looking where you might go. We all have different paths, and helping others find theirs is why I teach.

My year with Jumpstart included multicultural, individualized, and limited special needs training for work with my students. My time with Princeton's Tutor.com and in undergrad cultivated a sharp attention to detail (written and spoken), an instrumental tool for providing feedback and understanding the student.

About the lesson

The most important first step is getting to know the student. Learning a bit about what they're into, how they work, and what they need help with goes a long way toward contextualizing everything that comes after. I love to hear what the student is passionate about outside of school; I'm of the opinion that every talent and hobby contributes something to the conversation, regardless of how "useful" society might deem it. It's impossible for a tutor to "get on the level" of their student, and– as a guiding figure– they shouldn't want to. I can, however, bring the student in on their own terms. This phase is crucial for that.
