About Margaret

As a lifelong reader and professional writer, I have a passion for English that I love sharing with others. Whatever the tone or purpose—college admissions essay, academic paper, creative writing, English lit class—what matters is the joy of understanding how language works and learning to use it well.

My Bachelor's degree in Political Science and job as an editor for a prestigious law journal provided me ample opportunity to hone my writing in technical, academic settings. I volunteered as a peer tutor with my college's Research and Writing Institute, where, as well as tutoring my fellow undergraduates, I worked with local high school students to help prepare their college admissions essays. At the same time, I began more actively pursuing my love of creative writing, and am today a published fiction author. I also regularly contribute nonfiction articles and essays to a number of online media outlets.

I have experience tutoring and helping students with their English skills at all levels, from basic spelling and grammar to standardized test preparation to college-level academic writing. It would be my pleasure to assist you with whatever English topic you want to study in more detail.

In high school, I volunteered as a peer tutor for French, English, and Calculus, and found that I loved it! College offered me more opportunities to work as a tutor for my peers in the undergraduate program and also with local teenagers who came to the college seeking writing, English, and college admissions help.

About the lesson

The first priority is always to understand each individual student's current level of knowledge and the skills they need to strengthen. To that end, I prefer to start with a conversation about what they are currently working on and where they think they're struggling. With that understanding in place, I focus first on broad concepts that are relevant or useful to their situation: I have found that first developing a conceptual framework first helps students retain and understand more specific topics.

Its most important to find tutors who truly care about writing, English, and the power of narrative, which lies at the heart of fiction and nonfiction writing alike. That passion drives us to not only memorize grammar and formatting rules but internalize them, understand how and why they work, and describe clearly which writing tactics should be deployed and when.

Details

My base rate is $20 per hour of tutoring for middle- and high-school-level topics, including admissions essay and SAT/ACT English preparation. College-level tutoring assistance, on any written project regardless of topic, costs $25-30 per hour.
