About Emily

I'm a highly qualified and enthusiastic teacher with training in classical language and experience teaching in a college setting.

I pride myself on being an understanding teacher who takes the time to get to know my students needs in order to help them reach thier full potential. Learning a new skill or developing one you already have can be stressful, and I want to relieve that stress as much as possible so my students can focus their work.

I've always had an interest an interest in teaching, and it is my goal later in my career to teach professionally in a college setting.

My education is in English and Theater, which gives me both the technical skills to help my students, and the interpersonal skills to put them at ease and make tutoring an enjoyable experience.

About the lesson

Step one is to ask my students what they would like to improve on and why. I want to understand where they may be falling behind and where their frustration lies.

Next, I talk to the student about why they think they are having issues with this subject/project specifically. I believe in giving students as much autonomy as possible and getting to the root of the problem as soon as possible to find the most effective solutions.

My students thus far has been mostly high-school and college. My first teaching experience was being a TA for a Shakespeare course in a juvenile detention center. During my time in grad school I had a role as a Graduate Teaching Fellow, teaching an undergrad class in the English department.

I would tell them that finding a good tutor is similar to finding a good therapist. You need to find someone who is not only qualified, but who you also feel comfortable with, and whose advise you trust.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask themselves not only what the problem is, but where the problem comes from. It might not be something you can readily identify, but thinking about it ahead of time will help find a solution that works for you.
