About Jan

Hi there! I am a recent graduate with a bachelors in History (major) and Biology (minor). I offer detailed services for my students to help them comprehend the subject/materials. I have tutored students in the past at my University for 1-2 years. In my undergraduate career, I have made several presentations in both History and Biology (Decolonization in India, Urban Hydroponics, Biological Basis of Behavior-Diabetes). I have also been awarded an Excellence in History award by my University and the head of the History department.

I started out teaching with my experience in tutoring in Biology for my fellow classmates based off of my notetaking skills and grasp on the subject. From there I started to tutor more in Biology and gradually in History. When History became more of a core focus in my undergraduate career I still tutored in Biology.

About the lesson

I like to begin by asking what their questions are, what they are struggling with. From there I make a few goals to meet by the end of the session and then I do a recap to make sure that the students' questions/concerns of the subject/materials were answered. I also like to create a study guide to walkthrough with the student.

I have worked with college-level students, undergrad, and graduate levels.

I would make sure that they are able to ask you questions about what you might not understand and to double-check information with you. To also make sure that the tutor will spend the time reserved with you, for you to help you gain a better understanding of the materials.

I am very fond of a recent presentation of my thesis before graduation. It felt really nice to teach a subject to fellow students and even professors of different programs.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think through:

1. What the overall/big picture is. What is the teacher trying to have you understand?

2. What is it that you do not understand (smaller details that may make the larger details confusing, etc).

3. What methods of learning work best for you?

4. Will there be time, in the end, to go over the material discussed, and for questions/clarifications?
