About Yasirah

I was a teacher from the first time I was introduced to teaching. My mom was a teacher and there was always markers, dry erased boards, chalk, poster boards, worksheet etc. around the house. From the time I could walk and talk I was always trying to write on the board with her and pretend I was doing anything she was doing when it was school related.

When I started school in pre-k I would come home and mock my teachers and would imitate their hand movements and my parents thought it was hilarious. I would take my schoolwork out and “teach” my imaginary class and say “this is yellow”, “this is green”, “this is blue” and my parents told me they would just watch me and say “She’s going to be a teacher”.

From kindergarten to 5th grade I would come home and play “teacher” and if my siblings wanted to play, they were my “students” and if they didn’t want to play I would teach my imaginary class. At the end of each “lesson” I would get my homework done and even sometimes go to the next section in my workbooks and simultaneously teach myself, because I had to “teach” my class.

In middle school I became a tutor with my mom and would help her 2nd grade students with their homework. I was well rounded in all subjects but math was my favorite. Helping my mom with her 2nd grade students allowed me to be able to touch up in each subject and be able to help others in all subjects.

By high school I stopped playing “teacher” to not seem immature and picked up the tutor role. I was still a teacher at heart and that was my passion and future career, but I focused more in high school on helping people get to where they need to be in math and sometimes other subjects. I would form study groups with some of my classmates and reteach the lesson that my teacher taught, but through a tutorial aspect. By the end of each session I was always happy to see them actually get it and I thought this would be something I could do everyday after school, so that I could never forget the information and help people understand the same information.

My freshman and sophomore year of college was when I stopped everything and focused on school. I told myself that I was just going to focus on my degree. The first semester of my junior year was when I realized that I can be a tutor and still be a full time student. I would just have to take late classes and have early classes on the weekends. My second semester of college is when I decided that why stop teaching to become a teacher. That makes no sense! So here I am writing this, in my second semester, on my couch, eating grapes and doing homework! lol! I’m thinking, why not be a tutor again.

Remember! Everyone is capable of doing anything, it’s all about your teacher and how they explain it to you, so that you can practice it and master it!

*YOU ARE YOUR OWN TEACHER!*

I enjoy seeing students reach their full potential. I am a firm believer in the philosophy of kaizen, or constant improvement. It's important to me to see that every student that I work with continues to make progress towards the pursuit of excellence.

When working with new students I feel it’s best to see what they’re good at in the subject they’re getting tutoring for. This method is to build confidence and for the student to say what they verbally know and also to get them to see that they know more than they think.
