About Alie
Math, despite its stereotype of being “useless”, can truly be found everywhere. From figuring out if it’s worth it to buy an item in bulk, to knowing how much of an ingredient to use when doubling a recipe, to analyzing your favorite sports player’s skills. My goal is to make my students understand this and recognize that learning math will greatly improve their life outside the classroom.
Through my education and research, as well as my experience in the classroom, I have learned that applying math to the real world is critical for the success of students. Once students can find that connection and link math, a subject that typically comes with a lot of anxiety, to a topic or activity they are knowledgeable about or find useful, they are able to see the math in a whole other light. Much of my teaching reflects this philosophy and I try to incorporate exploratory activities relating math to non-academic activities in most of my lessons.
I truly enjoy teaching math, especially 1:1 or in small groups. Getting to know my students and help them build on both their strengths and weaknesses is a wonderful opportunity that I feel lucky enough to get on a daily basis as a high school math teacher. One of the most wonderful feelings in the world is helping a student understand the material and making it "click" on a deeper level than just memorizing formulas to pass a test.
From a young age I knew I always wanted to be a teacher. I loved helping my friends with their math homework on the bus to and from school. As I grew older and got more opportunities to work in the field, my love of teaching math only grew stronger.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Master of Arts in Mathematics Education. I have been working in the classroom with students for 6 years, tutoring for 6 and have had my own classroom for 2. Recently, I presented my work at the Mathematical Association of America Conference where I received the "outstanding" award.

When working with a new student, I first like to sit down and talk about goals. What are they hoping to accomplish short term? What are they hoping to accomplish long term? I then like to assess their current skill level and compare it to grade level to finally develop a plan with them on how to help them acheive these long term and short term goals.
I have worked with a large population of students. This population pulls from many smaller ones including students at all academic levels and classes from applied classes to AP levels.
The main piece of advice I would give students looking to hire a math teacher is to come prepared to give your full effort. I truly believe that all students are capable of learning the material when they put their mind to it, and I am excited to get the opportunity to help them do that.
Recently, I was able to get back in my classroom after teaching from home for an extended period of time due to the pandemic. Although I enjoyed the challenge of teaching remotely and helping my students succeed though unprecedented times, I felt a warmness wash over me as I stepped back into my classroom in August. It was so great to be able to see the friendly faces of my fellow teachers and students again after a long time away.
