About Christopher
I've been a tutor and educator since 2012. I primarily teach math, Latin, coding, and ESL. For Math I teach up to college level linear algebra. For Latin, I teach up to AP level (Aeneid). For coding, I teach some college level CS and coding, but you can inquire to hear more.
I'm professional and experienced. I can provide you with plenty of references, resume, state background check or whatever else you need to feel confident about working with me. I usually start off with a brief phone call just to talk about your situation and see if we're a good fit.
While I enjoy working with all kinds of students, most of my students are between middle school and college level. As someone diagnosed with ADHD, I'm also very empathetic with organizational/attentional issues and I often coach students with those kinds of issues as well.
Looking forward to meeting you!
Perhaps it sounds a little cliche, but what I love the most about tutoring is when there's an "I got it!" kind of moment, where something that was puzzling us before now all of a sudden falls into place. It's really a joy to see that happen in my students.
Over the years, I've found though that I increasingly enjoy helping students through not just the content, but also on the process, so they feel empowered to accomplish their academic goals on their own and to use their teachers/tutors as resources not as crutches.
I jumped into it immediately after college.
I graduated from Roxbury Latin and Brown University, and then have had a diverse range of teaching experiences since, including time teaching English in Thailand, as well as teaching classes and private students back in the US in Boston.

First, I'll want to just have a phone call and go over what we want to work on and what our goals are.
I have had many types of students from middle schoolers to people in their 40s. While most of my private tutoring has been with students in the Boston area, I now have students from all over the world from as far away as Hong Kong!
In my free time I love making art. I recently painted some paintings of my cat and they turned out better than I expected!

Chris was one of the best tutors that I have been taught by!
I had Chris help me with my calculus 1 class as well as my college application essays.
He was very knowledgeable on calculus and essay writing and did a really good job of breaking down complex problems and making them much easier to understand.
In terms of essay writing, I learned how to write more concise, structured, and impactful essays. I also improved my grammar and vocabulary significantly.
In terms of calculus, I went from someone who was struggling to understand basic calculus concepts to getting a final grade of an A.
Overall, I strongly believe that I became a much more organized student as well as a critical thinker thanks to his help. I would highly recommend him to anyone no matter if you are someone who is struggling with a subject or if you want to advance your skills further.
Chris has been a sensational tutor for our middle school and teenage boys. He helps them with math and other subjects. He's provided extracurricular enrichment in advanced math, coding and creative writing. They look forward to their time with him, whether they need help with a new topic or have things under control and want a new challenge. He's got a great rapport with our boys, whether it's math or writing, and they look forward to the challenges he puts in front of them. We're grateful for the support and encouragement he gives them each week. He's a delight and inspiration!
To Whom It May Concern,
Without reservation we enthusiastically recommend Chris Oates for any tutor position. Chris worked with our high school son over the course of two and a half years on Calculus, Latin, and SAT prep. We found him to be organized, patient, and highly knowledgeable. In particular Chris’ manner of encouragement instilled in our son a sense of confidence and academic engagement. When our son graduated from high school we asked which of his teachers he had learned the most from, Chris was one of the only three names mentioned.

Parents of High School Student"I highly recommend working with Chris. Last year he helped our daughter in her AP calculus class. She had trouble following along in class as her teacher moved through material too quickly. Chris was patient and very helpful in explaining concepts that her teacher hadn't been explaining well, and helped her achieve a 5 on the AP exam."
