About Kristel

Hello! I’m Kristel, an English tutor whose whole career has been built around stories.

I love creating and telling stories, and I want to help the next generation fall in love with them too. That’s why I teach English. When a child discovers that reading and writing can be fun, their confidence grows in every subject.

I spent two years as a manager at Explore Learning, where I also tutored children in English and saw first-hand how much difference it makes when a child feels confident in their own work. I then moved into publishing, where I’ve worked for five years. I’ve co-edited two published short story anthologies, and I now work with publishers of inclusive children’s books. That means I always have great recommendations to hand, so I can point students towards books they’ll genuinely enjoy beyond the syllabus, where they might even see themselves on the page.

I graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Marine Biology from Newcastle University, then went on to earn an MA in Publishing with Distinction from UCL. Coming to English from a science background taught me that good writing isn’t just for “natural” writers. With clear explanations and a solid structure, anyone can learn it, and it means I can help with scientific writing too.

I’m reliable, well prepared, and always happy to chat through your child’s goals before we begin. I’d love to help them become a more confident reader and a stronger writer.

About the lesson

My lessons are friendly, imaginative and built around the individual student. No two learners are the same, so I start by finding out where your child is now, what they find tricky, and what they love reading, watching or writing about. From there, I plan each lesson around clear, achievable goals.

How I teach
• Reading made enjoyable: we explore how authors create effects using texts students actually like, alongside set texts and past papers.
• Creative writing through play: picture prompts, story games and “what if?” challenges get ideas flowing, then we edit together to make the writing shine.
• Step-by-step support: I model how to plan an answer or structure an essay, then gradually step back until students can do it confidently on their own.
• Exam technique (11+, GCSE, A-level): timed practice, mark schemes explained in plain English, and specific feedback on where to pick up marks.

Lesson format
All lessons are online, so students can learn from home with no travel time. Sessions usually last 60 minutes, though younger primary children often focus better in 45-minute sessions.

My experience
I spent two years as a manager at Explore Learning, where I also tutored children in English. I’ve since worked in publishing for five years, co-editing two published anthologies. I hold an MA in Publishing (Distinction) from UCL.

Who my lessons are for
Students aged roughly 5 to 18: primary (KS1 and KS2), 11+, KS3, GCSE English Language and Literature, and A-level essay and NEA coursework support.
