About Karen
Aside from being proficient at Maths and Science, I am also very patient and enthusiastic. I have helped a lot of students reach their full potential and not only ace their exams but more importantly, really understand the subject matter at hand.
Having been a secondary maths teacher trainee, I have been exposed to the rigour of day-to-day teaching. I have learned and developed immensely from teaching students across key stages 1 to 5. Working with different sets of students with various levels of skills has pushed me to be more creative when it comes to teaching different topics. This is particularly essential especially for underachieving students who have the potential to perform better but need a more stable foundation of knowledge. I have also learned to be more flexible and be able to break down complicated topics into bite-sized chunks so the student can 'digest' them better.
I previously taught Functional Skills Mathematics to KS4 pupils at a local training and education provider, which is very much similar to how pupil referral units work. The pupils proved to be a challenging bunch — not only because they were falling extremely behind academically but also because most of them have Special Educational Needs. The entire experience has been a steep learning curve. As I was solely in charge of making sure that they leave with a Mathematics qualification, I have to make sure that we can cover the entire syllabus in time for the exam but at the same time, ensure that they understand the rationale behind all of it — not only how to do Maths but also why we do Maths.
