About Adam
I’m Adam. I’m an experienced educator, tutor and coach with more than 20 years’ experience of teaching and supporting young people and adults.
The students I tutor all start from different places. Some are already doing well and want support to reach a higher grade. Others are struggling with the subject or have little confidence in what they can do. Wherever my students start from, they all achieve grades 7–9.
This success rate is a result of my experience, my creativity and my belief in the importance of differentiation. I don’t have a single approach that I expect every student to follow. I take time to understand the person I’m working with, including what they can already do, where they are finding things difficult and what seems to help. I’m happy to change the way I explain or approach something whenever necessary.
This way of working has developed over more than two decades in education. I spent most of this time in higher education, working as a Senior Lecturer, Programme Leader and Head of Department. More recently, however, I’ve worked much more closely with individual learners, including GCSE and A Level students, younger pupils and young people with SEND.
I have considerable experience of working one-to-one with children and young people who need additional support with their learning. This includes working as a Special Needs Assistant in primary schools and preparing autistic students for their GCSEs.
My background is in Drama and the arts, and creativity has always been an important part of my teaching. I’m also a qualified and accredited coach. This informs the way I help students develop confidence in their own ideas and abilities and, importantly, become less reliant on me as they become more confident in working things out for themselves.
I’m a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, an accredited member of the Association for Coaching and a Certified Openmind Practitioner.

The first thing I want to understand is what a student needs from me. That might be help with something they haven’t understood, support with an essay or exam question, or finding ways to organise and express ideas more effectively. A student might be doing well but want to improve a particular aspect of their work. They might know a great deal but struggle to show it under exam conditions. They may also have reached a point where they no longer feel particularly confident about the subject.
I shape lessons around the individual rather than working through the same material in the same way with everyone. I explain things, ask questions, look at examples and give students opportunities to try things for themselves. I want to find out how they are thinking and where a difficulty is coming from rather than simply correcting an answer.
My experience of SEND is particularly useful here. I’m used to breaking things down when that helps, allowing time to process information and finding different ways into something that is proving difficult. A student can tell me that they don’t understand, that they need more time or that the way I’ve explained something isn’t helping. I’m perfectly happy to explain something again, or approach it in a completely different way.
For GCSE and A Level students, we can work closely with the demands of the course and the assessment. This might involve understanding what a question is asking, developing and organising an argument, using evidence, working through past papers or looking carefully at feedback to identify what needs further attention. Where exams are approaching, we can also work on revision and on using the available time effectively.
I want students to feel comfortable enough to ask questions and make mistakes, while also knowing that I will expect them to think and have a go. As their confidence and understanding develop, I gradually encourage them to take more responsibility for the work themselves. Ideally, tutoring should make a student increasingly confident in what they can do without a tutor.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Adam is professional, knowledgeable, patient and highly motivating. He has supported my son with both GCSE English Language and English Literature, helping him to structure his essays effectively and guiding him in how to approach different types of exam questions.
For English Literature, he developed my son’s understanding of the context behind each novel, strengthened his ability to learn and apply quotations accurately and showed him how to integrate them meaningfully into his paragraphs. Over time, his essay structure improved significantly.
Adam consistently provided detailed written and verbal feedback after every piece of work, clearly explaining what had gone well and identifying precise next steps for improvement. Most importantly, he built my son’s confidence ahead of his exams. I would highly recommend Adam.
Adams' teaching approach combines clarity, engagement, and high academic standards. His endless support throughout my years at university was a cornerstone of my academic development. Amazing at what he does!
