About Christiaan

I'm Chris, a passionate Latin tutor with a strong multilingual background.

Born into a Dutch family and a native Dutch speaker, I spent my early years in the Netherlands, followed by 10 years in Germany, 3 years in Mexico, and now I live in Spain. This international journey has given me a deep appreciation for languages, etymology, and the historical connections between them — something I love bringing into my Latin lessons.

I specialize in making Latin accessible and enjoyable. Whether you need help improving your high school grades or want to explore classical texts with confidence, I adapt my teaching to your needs. My students appreciate my clear explanations, patience, and ability to connect Latin to English and other modern languages, which makes the material far easier to remember.

Outside the classroom, I enjoy exercise, martial arts, swimming, reading, and good films — activities that help me stay balanced and bring positive energy to every lesson.

I’m fully committed to your progress and to creating a supportive, professional environment where you can learn without stress. Many students who once struggled with Latin now feel confident and even start to enjoy it.

Let’s work together and make Latin work for you!

About the lesson

I offer private one-to-one Latin lessons fully tailored to your goals and learning style.
My approach: I teach in two ways depending on your needs:

- For enthusiasts and serious learners: I use Hans Ørberg’s Lingua Latina per se Illustrata (natural method). You read real Latin stories from day one with pictures and notes, learning through context instead of endless tables.
- For high school students: I focus on your curriculum, homework, and exams. Clear explanations, English connections for vocabulary, and targeted practice to boost your grades quickly.

Every lesson is personalized. I adapt to how you learn best and make tricky topics feel manageable.

Typical 50-minute lesson
1. Review homework and recent material.
2. Introduce and practice new grammar or reading.
3. Apply what you’ve learned through translation and targeted exercises.

What sets me apart:
- Flexible methods (natural or exam-focused).
- Patient, encouraging style with strong etymology explanations.
- Multilingual background that helps me explain concepts clearly from multiple angles.

As a student who started studying English from zero, I recommend Christiaan language lessons because of three main reasons. First, his classes integrate writing, speaking, and reading, so that you develop the three skills at the same time. Second, he plans the lessons based on your abilities and the difficulties you might encounter when learning. This means that each lesson is personalised. Third, Christiaan wants you to have fun during the lessons, which means he will choose topics of your interest to practice. In this way, you learn the vocabulary you need to express yourself while enjoying the material content. Highly recommended!

Christiaan is an excellent language teacher who really puts in the time and effort to understand how you (as a student) learn things effectively. He takes a hybrid approach to teaching to ensure that you can meet your goals (e.g. to get a certification) as well as giving you the grounding in the language so that you can use the language out in the country you're learning for, helping you to build confidence, as well as your lexicon.

Really, the results speak for themselves. I was able to make much faster progress in my own studies than I had been able to do by studying on my own, or attending larger classroom classes.

I would highly recommend Christaan as a language teacher. He is very patient and fun to speak with, which makes the lessons enjoyable. He uses a mix of teaching methods, including reading texts, grammar, and speaking so that you are able to practice multiple skills and do not become bored or frustrated. I very much enjoy our lessons and would recommend him highly to other language learned, regardless of their language level.

Christiaan clearly loves teaching! He always explains grammar in an easy to understand way, yet he can also give a deeper explanation if I ask him about it. I really like that, since I like to understand things thoroughly. I also find the manner in which we practice pronunciation very helpful.
